Gas prices skyrocket in Regina

REGINA – Anyone filling up at the pumps in Regina today is in for an unpleasant surprise – gas prices have jumped as much as 16 cents per litre.

On Tuesday night gas prices in the Queen City were sitting at an average of $1.08 a litre. Wednesday morning prices skyrocketed to as much as $1.21 per litre, which is the largest single day jump the city has seen according to GasBuddy.

The price hike is being attributed to major issues at one of the largest refineries in the United States.

“The BP Refinery in Whiting, Indiana… has half of its capacity offline, and that’s having ripple effects into Canada,” says Gas Buddy co-founder Jason Toews.

Reuters is reporting that the largest crude distillation unit at the refinery has suffered heavy damage, and will take about a month to repair. Normally the facility produces 413,500 barrels per day.

“We could see gas prices going even higher yet; even up to $1.28 per litre,” says Toews.

According to GasBuddy the price of crude oil on Tuesday was at its lowest point in 2,344 days at $43.37 per barrel.
