Last Election: Conservative Hayes defeated NDP Martin by 1,861 votes. Under the new boundaries, Hayes would still have won in 2011, but the margin would have been smaller, a win by 1,193 votes.

History: Hayes’ win in 2011 marked the first time voters had elected an MP on the political right since 1984. From 1988 to 2011, the riding switched back and forth between the Liberals and the NDP.
Demographics: 46 per cent of people in Sault Ste. Marie said they weren’t religious in the 2011 National Household Survey, the highest number in Ontario.
