Summary: This riding has a large Franco-Ontarian population, and is one of the most solidly Liberal in the country, having elected Liberals both federally and provincially in every election since its creation in 1935. It was formerly called Ottawa East. Mauril Bélanger has represented this riding since 1995, and he is seeking re-election.

Boundaries: This riding stretches from Sandy Hill on its western side, to Beacon Hill North on its east side. A minor boundary change adds Cardinal Heights and Beacon Hill South to this riding (from the former riding of Ottawa-Orléans).

Last Election: Liberal Mauril Bélanger won with 38.2 per cent of the vote, followed by NDP Trevor Haché with 29.4 per cent.

History: MP’s for this riding have a history of serving long stints in Parliament. It has had just 5 MPs since 1935, all Liberals—and the party has won every election here by at least five per cent.

Demographics: French was the first language of 27.9 per cent of people in this riding as of the 2011 census, second highest in Ottawa and fifth highest in Ontario overall.
