TORONTO — Odd animal trends come and go, but the latest one — the “dog bun” — could actually harm your pet.

The online trend has a dog’s hair gathered into a bun on top of its head. Or, if there is not enough hair, the dog’s ears are pinned up with an elastic, to look like a bun. And that’s where the problem lies.

Despite online declarations that the “dog bun” trend is “everything right now,” experts are warning about the hazards it poses.

“It can damage the ear,” said Dr. Lula Vihos from Toronto’s Downtown Animal Hospital. “It can cause open wounds, cuts, which then risk the chance of being infected, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong with that depending on how soon you treat it.”

The veterinarian said the bands can cause circulation problems, as well as damage the dog’s fur.

“It’s not a natural position for them [the dog’s ears] to be in. It can be very painful in the sense that, again, it’s cutting off circulation but also the hair can matte.”

Dog’s ears act as the barrier to the outside world, and the dogbun can often leave ears exposed.

“The ears are a form of protection for the inner ear canal and the ear drum, so you are essentially removing the natural protection of the ear drum and the ear canal, so that can cause issues as well.”
