B.C. Mountie under investigation after $10,000, cocaine disappears

NANAIMO – A Mountie in Nanaimo, B.C., is under investigation after $10,000 cash and some cocaine disappeared from an exhibit locker in the RCMP detachment.

Supt. Norm McPhail says the money and drugs were seized during a drug investigation and were stored in a temporary exhibit locker.

They were discovered missing during a routine movement of exhibits at the detachment in December.

An officer in the Nanaimo detachment with eight years’ experience on the force has been removed from service pending an internal code of conduct investigation.

A separate criminal investigation is also under way to determine what happened to the exhibits.

McPhail says as those investigations proceed, he’s made several changes to the way exhibits are handled in the detachment.
