Cars that were frozen in ice at a port in Halifax in February 2015 are being recalled over safety concerns. Global News

HALIFAX – Close to 3,000 cars that were frozen into a parking lot at Dartmouth’s Canport during ice storms in February are being recalled by Transport Canada due to safety concerns.

Transport Canada says the vehicles may have been exposed to excessive standing water and salt for an extended period.

Several models of BMWs and Mini Coopers are impacted by the recall.

Certain Mini models could have corrosion at the starter motor power supply cable connectors, which could lead to an inability to restart the engine following an engine shutdown by the start-stop (MSA) system and increase the risk of a crash.

For some BMW models, the lubrication systems of internal components may have been affected. That could lead to higher than normal steering effort or steering binding, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Electrical wires in both BMW and Mini models may also have been exposed to salt or water, leading to increase electrical system resistance and an increased risk of fire.

Transport Canada says the necessary vehicle inspection procedures and associated corrective action are still under development.
