Chilean man wearing headphones hit and killed by train in Alberta resort town

BANFF, Alta. – A 27-year-old man from Chile has become the latest in a recent string of people hit by trains while wearing headphones.

RCMP say the man died after being hit by a Canadian Pacific Railway train in the Rocky Mountain resort town of Banff, Alta., on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers say it happened nearly a kilometre east of the Banff train station.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP say the man was wearing a toque and headphones and it’s believed he did not hear the train coming.

Just last week, witnesses said a 16-year-old boy who died after being hit by a train in Oshawa, Ont. may have been distracted by texting and listening to music on headphones.

The day before that, a young man wearing headphones was killed in similar circumstances in Leduc, Alta.

The RCMP are reminding pedestrians that walking on rail tracks is very unsafe and can have tragic consequences.

They say it is especially important to be aware of your surroundings whether walking or driving, and ensure that your vision and hearing are not obstructed.
