Summary: A riding with high-profile candidates and high-profile crime issues, Surrey-Newton is considered a riding to watch in this year’s election, as NDP MP Jinny Sims will square off again with the former Liberal MP she defeated in 2011.
Boundaries: This compact electoral district is bordered by Highway 10 to the north, 120th Street to the west, 88th Avenue to the north, and 144th Street to the east.
Last Election: Jinny Sims won this seat in a tight three-way race last election (when it was known was Newton-North Delta), defeating two-term Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal by two per cent.

However, redistricting has removed North Delta and added north Newton to the riding. Had it existed in the last election with the current boundaries, the NDP would have taken still won, but by just 1.2 per cent more votes than the Liberals (based on polling results).
History: Newton-North Delta has had tight three-way elections in all four elections it was contested, going to the Conservatives in 2004 before Dhaliwal won in 2006 and 2008.
Demographics: A riding of extremes, the median age (35.3) is the lowest in the province, while the average income ($29,837) is the second lowest. English is the mother tongue for just 35.1 per cent of residents, the second-lowest figure in B.C. And 58.6 per cent identified as South Asian in the 2011 National Household Survey, the second highest figure in the country.
