TORONTO – The Toronto Police Service has launched a mobile app as a new tool to help fight crime in the city.
The free downloadable app provides services such as filing certain reports online, access to crime prevention information and locating police stations.
“The Toronto Police Service is committed to leveraging technology to keep you, the community, engaged and connected,” Chief Mark Saunders said in an in-app video.
“The app will allow us to send out community safety alerts to you, keeping you informed of major issues, missing persons and other important information.”
Police say the app also keeps the public informed with access to news releases, photos, videos, and links to social media feeds.
“You can enter a police report from the app, start an investigation for both a criminal matter and also to report local neighbourhood issues and driving complaints,” said Saunders.
“We need you to report incidents so we can respond and keep your neighbourhood safe.”
The app was developed by MobilePD, an Austin, Texas-based development firm, with law enforcement clients in the United States.
“We are extremely excited to welcome the Toronto Police Service to the MobilePD family,” said Kushyar Kasraie, CEO of MobilePD in a media release.
“Since our beginning, we have worked to make local communities safer and increase cooperation between law enforcement agencies and citizens. We can’t wait to see how Toronto benefits from this technology.”
Toronto police say this is the first version of the app and are looking for public feedback to make the mobile experience better.
The app is now available for download on Android and iOS devices with access to BlackBerry and Windows users in the coming weeks.
