KELOWNA – Starting Thursday no fishing will be allowed in the Middle Shuswap River from Shuswap Falls to Mable Lake. The province says it is “suspending” all fishing on that part of the river starting Thursday and continuing through until September 30, 2015. The provincial ministry responsible is banning fishing because of river conditions.
Anglers typically fish for trout and salmon in the Middle Shuswap River. Manager of provincial fisheries, Mike Ramsay says both types of fish get stressed when water temperatures are high.

“We’ve got a combination of low flows, so there are very few places that the salmon can congregate as they are coming up to spawn and we have got high water temperatures, 18 to 20 degrees. These fish are concentrated and they are stressed,” says Ramsay. “Now they are easy to target because they are stuck in a few areas and they are already under stress. We don’t want people putting additional stress on them by angling them. That can cause them to have mortalities or not be successful in spawning. “
The province says fishing on that portion of the river would typically be closed from September 1 to October 31 anyway.
Earlier this month, Fisheries and Oceans Canada also banned salmon fishing on Mable Lake and the Shuswap River until further notice.
