Bike theft reports up 58 per cent in Kelowna Area

KELOWNA – The number of bicycle thefts reported in the central Okanagan has spiked in the first half of this year. Kelowna RCMP say 238 bikes were taken between January and June of 2015. It’s a 58 per cent increase over the 151 bicycles thefts that were reported in the first six months of 2014.

Police are now asking the public to help them tackle bike theft.

“Through the recent police operation that saw a bicycle “chop shop” dismantled has definitely had a positive effect, it is at best temporary. A greater, longer lasting effect will result when the public takes responsibility for the identification and security of their property,” wrote Cst. Steve Holmes in a news release.

In particular, police say bike owners should be keeping track of their bike’s information, including its serial number, and also making sure they lock-up their bikes.
