EDMONTON – Due to elevated levels of fecal coliforms present in the water of Hasse Lake, Alberta Health Services is advising the public not to swim or wade in the lake, effective immediately.

Hasse Lake is located in Parkland County west of Edmonton.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Coliform bacteria generally originates in the intestines of warm-blooded animals.

The public is also advised not to drink the contaminated lake water, as water-borne organisms, including fecal coliforms, can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Elevated levels of fecal coliforms were detected when officials tested the lake water.

At current levels, skin, ear and eye infections can result from any contact with the water.

The Hasse Lake area is operated by Parkland County, and is a popular stop for local residents.

AHS Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the water at Hasse Lake.
