Mother bear charges people at Ironman Whistler after being separated from cubs

ABOVE: The Whistler Ironman competition is a test of endurance and skill — but this year –it was also a test of nerve. A mother bear got separated from her three cubs along the route and charged some people at the event. Jeremy Hunka has more on the hair-raising experience for all concerned.

Conservation officers say it’s lucky no one was hurt after a bear charged several people at the Ironman Triathlon in Whistler.

Thousands of athletes and spectators were at the event on Sunday when a mother bear became separated from her three cubs along the route.

Witnesses say the mother bear started to bluff charge people and that’s when conservation officers moved in with tranquilizer guns and removed the four animals from the area.

“It’s potentially life-threatening or [could cause] serious bodily harm if a bear were to attack in that situation,” says Conservation Officer Tim Schmacher.
