Funnel clouds reported near Airdrie – advisories for Calgary and other areas dropped

Here we go again.

Environment Canada said funnel clouds have been reported near Airdrie early Sunday afternoon.  But it said the funnel did not touch ground.

At 2:11 p.m. a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds and Sundre.

A few minutes later, the watch turned into a warning, and included Carstairs, Cremona and Water Valley.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.”

“An unstable airmass has allowed some strong thunderstorms to form in the foothills. These storms should dissipate this evening. The watch area may be expanded to include other regions.”

  • Rocky Mountain House – Caroline

The advisories were issued at 12:39 p.m. and then dropped at 3 p.m.

On its website, Environment Canada states “conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today (Sunday).”

“Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.”
