There will be no cyclists decorating their bikes with glow sticks this year. The event has been cancelled due to it’s the growth in size over the past years. Last year there was approximately 7000 people that participated. The Vancouver Bikes Raves organizer Willis posted a Facebook status explaining that the “Vancouver police department received hundreds of 911 calls at last year’s event. Residents around the area complained mostly about noise, some in fear of a possible riot”
The following day, neighbors found garbage and damage to a community garden. There were also liquor bottles, cigarette packs and glow sticks discarded around the area.
According to the past organizers from Cranked Cycling, they are officially not organizing a bike rave for this year due to required police presence and the possibility of fines.
“The officers that get assigned to these sorts of things cannot be from their regular schedule, thus receive double time pay, which comes to about $4-5000 in total. The city feels a responsibility at that size to be present, and thus wants proper registration and fees.” Willis explained.
Smaller scale bike events will still be happening in August.
