University of Regina hosts symposium on public engagement

REGINA – Speakers from around the world were in Regina to discuss public engagement and how university work impacts the world.

Around 150 people were on hand to listen to the 17 presentations and to engage in discussion about how they could use the ideas at their own institutions.

The aim was to demonstrate how the work of researchers can be more than writing academic articles and to highlight how it can changed public policy.

The researchers want to increase public awareness of the important work being done at universities.

“The public has a right to know what we do and we want to explore how we can do things better and more effective,” said Dr. James McNinch, the co-chair of the symposium. “It isn’t just about coming to university so you can prepare yourself to get a job. It’s about changing the world and making a better society”

The symposium continues Saturday at the University of Regina in the Research and Innovation Centre and admission is free.
