A large fire that started at a Saanich landfill is now under control.

Fire crews were alerted at 6:30 p.m. Thursday about an uncontrolled fire, approximately 50 feet in diameter, burning at the Hartland Landfill Facility.

Initial response involved two engines, one tanker and nine firefighters. But crews from Victoria, Central Saanich, and Highlands fire departments were called in to perform water shuttling procedures. Five fire tanker trucks were used to shuttle water to the blaze.

This has led to traffic delays in the area as tanker trucks were accessing water near an intersection.

The fire is now contained and crews will be mopping up hot spots throughout the day.

Residents in the Hartland area may see a reduced water pressure in their homes today due to the water shuttling from fire hydrants. The landfill will be closed until Monday.
