The couple was transported to a local area hospital, where they have been treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The dog, which has been identified as a pitbull, had been secured on the balcony of the apartment before officers responded. It has since been removed from the home by New Westminster Animal Control Services and remains in their care.

New Westminster Animal Control Services will be investigating the case and may refer to the SPCA for further assistance.

Sergeant Jeff Scott with New Westminster police told Global News there is currently no criminal investigation into the incident.

Neighbours say the couple and two young kids have only lived in the suite for a few months. The children were not hurt and are currently with family members. It is not clear who the owner of the dog is.
