CALGARY- Calgary city council approved a request on Monday to help the city of Chestermere recover from recent storms and flash flood-related damage.

Two storms in the city, just east of Calgary, resulted in more than 300 homes being flooded over the past week.

Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews asked Mayor Naheed Nenshi if Calgary would be willing to provide a discount for flood-related waste at its landfills. The mayor said granting that request and providing other help was an easy call.

“It’s really the least we could do,” said Mayor Nenshi. “There was a lot of assistance from the neighbouring communities for our own flood, and when I spoke with the mayor, there were a few things we were able to do to help them out in the immediate response.

“We sent some trucks over; we helped out with some hoses and things like that. But she suggested that this was one thing that they really wanted, so we’re happy to help as much as we can.”

Chestermere will receive a 50 per cent discount on landfill rates for an undetermined period of time.

Rocky View County will get the same discount for flood damage in the hamlet of Langdon that resulted from the same storms.
