CALGARY – Dozens of residents of Chateau Renoir retirement residence were evacuated as a result of gas leak on Friday.

The Calgary Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide leak that started in the basement of the building. Workers suspect one of the pool boilers could have been the source of the leak.

The evacuees were taken to the Calgary Jewish Comunity Centre while fire crews were working. The fire department was able to shut off the leak before all 120 residents of the retirement home had to be evacuated from the building.

“It was an extremely successful evacuation, we are very proud of our team and their execution of the evacuation drills,” said Alain Boileau, executive director at Chateau Renoir.

None of the evacuees had to be taken to hospital; two were assessed on scene by Alberta Health Services, but didn’t need treatment.

The levels of carbon monoxide found in the building were not life-threatening. However, they could have caused chest pains for people with heart-related issues.
