Overpasses coming for Highway 1 east of Regina

Two people were pronounced dead on the scene of a crash at Highway 1 and Pilot Butte. Global News

Regina – A 68-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from Emerald Park have been identified as the victims in Wednesday’s fatal crash near Pilot Butte.

The driver of the truck they collided with was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

According to the most recent stats available, from 2013, that stretch of Highway 1 near Balgonie sees more accidents than any other in the province.

In the last few years, the Ministry of Highways has added highway exit ramps,  put up collision signs, improved lighting, reduced the speed limit, and installed photo radar boxes.

Global Regina’s comments section on this story had many people debating the various merits of the measures put in place, while others wish the ministry had skipped them all together and built overpasses instead.

“Because of the human factor, no matter what you do in transportation engineering there’s always going to be some risk,” said Joel Cherry with the Ministry of  Highways. “You can certainly do a lot to mitigate risk. That’s why as part of the Regina bypass project, which is starting up soon, we’re building four overpasses east of Regina, including at the Pilot Butte access.”

Pre-construction work on the overpasses is expected to start in the next few weeks.
