Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame announces 2015 induction class

WINNIPEG – It’s a day many athletes wait a lifetime for, to be recognized as one of the best and go down in history books where it all started.

The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame announced their 2015 induction class Thursday which included five athletes, two builders and one team.

Headlining the list of inductees was Brandon-born Bill Ranford who won two Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers in 1988 and 1990. He received the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP in 1990 and went on to play with Boston, Washington and Tampa Bay before finishing his career in Edmonton.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers place kicker Trevor Kennerd, basketball star Ken Opalko, sprinter Ken Peters and rower Jeff Powell were also honoured as athletes.

The University of Manitoba Bisons 1964-64 hockey team was showcased 50 years after they won the province’s first and only Canadian University men’s championship title to date.

Arjinder Chawka who coached many national and international athletes as well as Gordon Cumming, a founding member of the Canadian Association of Sports Sciences, were the two builder inductees.

The 36th annual induction ceremony is on November 7, 2015 at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.
