Chestermere flooded again just two days after 300 homes damaged

CALGARY – Residents in Chestermere are cleaning up the damage left behind by a second summer storm.

A deluge of rain and hail began around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, just two days after a severe thunderstorm hammered the city, causing damage to over 300 homes.

“It was an unpleasant experience to see more rainfall (after Sunday), but we so far have only had a handful of phone calls with additional flooding,” said Mayor Patricia Matthews on Tuesday evening.

The city said earlier on Tuesday it had applied to the provincial government to receive flooding assistance for residents affected by Sunday’s storm.

“City Council and Staff have been in contact with the Provincial Government in order to bring the flood situation to their attention and request funding help for our residents in what is a very difficult time for many people,” said Mayor Patricia Matthews in a statement.

In addition, the city is offering one free basement inspection per affected home for electrical, gas/plumbing and building to any resident affected by the flooding.

“This is a ‘pre-mediation’ inspection only to assist you with assessing the damage,” said the city in a release, urging people to call 403-207-7075 to book the inspection.

“Homeowners may need to call other professionals for different types of inspections (i.e. mold/water quality). Please refer to your insurance provider or a remediation specialist for other concerns.”

Power had been restored to Chestermere and all roads were open as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The city said tap water was safe to use, but urged people to scale back to “slow the flow to sewers.”
