HALIFAX — It’s been a staple in downtown Halifax for nearly three decades, but the Halifax Feast Dinner Theatre has officially closed its doors for the last time.
“It is very disheartening to hear for a lot of people, because it has employed a lot of people over the years,” said Allison Basha, an actor who got her start at the dinner theatre.
Basha said the closing is a loss for the arts community. “I think the feast was a major motivation in me to pursue, and I went on to study theatre, I went to go on and do other things so I think a lot of people are very thankful for that as well.”
There was no advance warning before the closure. In a message on it’s Facebook page on Monday, the company said it was facing difficult economic times. In the last 29 years, Halifax Feast Dinner Theatre has produced more than 100 shows and employed 250 performers.
The loss of the theatre is also hitting hard for customers.
“It’s something I was looking forward to, never been there, heard great things about it and all of a sudden they’re closing up,” said Brandon Crowell.
Crowell got a gift certificate for Christmas to attend the Halifax Feast Dinner Theatre. He had made reservations for last weekend before finding out about the closure and is upset with how the theatre treated him.
“Called three different time, waited three days, finally got a call back after I made an online reservation and just to be told we’re closing up shop,” he said. “I asked what to you mean, are you going out of business? He said yes. Well what are they doing about gift certificates, he said I don’t know and he hung up.”
Crowell’s gift certificate was purchased at Costco. The company told Global News that anyone who bought a gift certificate through Costco would be reimbursed.
No one with Halifax Feast Dinner Theatre returned our requests for an interview.
