Retired seeing eye dog rescued from Burrard Inlet

Burbank safely back on the shore. West Vancouver Police

The West Vancouver Police, the VPD Marine Unit and the Coast Guard jumped into action in West Vancouver on Monday to save a dog caught up in a strong current in the Burrard Inlet.

Const. Jeff Palmer with the West Vancouver Police says Burbank, a 10-year-old retired seeing eye dog, was swimming off the eastern shore of Ambleside Park with his Burnaby owner on the shore.

Burbank went a little far out and suddenly got caught in a tidal current. “We began to receive a number of urgent calls,” said Palmer.

The West Vancouver Police responded on the shore, with the Coast Guard and the Marine Unit on the water.

“The VPD Marine Unit found the dog in an area off Capilano River,” said Palmer. “He’d been in the water for about 10 to 15 minutes. You’d think he’d be getting tired. He was just about to be swept under the Lions Gate Bridge.”

Burbank was reunited with his grateful owner but it seemed like he wasn’t ready to get out of the water just yet.

“He was tugging on his leash to get back to the beach when he was on shore,” said Palmer.
