QUEBEC – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says Quebec is more likely to get behind the Energy East oil pipeline if her province shows it’s protecting the environment.

Notley says that’s the impression she got following her first face-to-face meeting with her Quebec counterpart, Philippe Couillard.

She says Couillard is being reasonable when he says he wants to see meaningful action on climate change before endorsing the cross-Canada pipeline.

Notley says she also understands why Couillard would want to be assured Quebec will benefit economically from Energy East.

Couillard has previously raised concerns about Quebec merely being a transit point for Alberta crude on its way to international markets.

If it proceeds, TransCanada’s (TSX:TRP) $12-billion Energy East pipeline would carry Alberta crude as far as Saint John, N.B., with the goal of feeding Canadian refineries as well as overseas customers.
