TORONTO – Canada continued its dominance in water events Tuesday after winning eight more medals, including five gold, in canoe/kayak and rowing events.
Halifax native Mark de Jonge won Canada’s first gold of the day in the K-1 200m event, beating out Brazil and Ecuador
“The race was really good actually; I executed exactly the way I wanted to,” the 31-year-old said. “I had a lot of pressure on my right side with the Argentinean and the Ecuadorian.”

Jason McCoombs was next to medal Tuesday, taking silver in the C-1 200m event. Brazil took the gold while Cuba rounded out the top three.
“Overall, it was a very good effort,” the Dartmouth, N.S native said. “I got off to a pretty good start, I was right up there, and then he just kind of pulled away in the last 75 metres.”
McCoombs crossed the finish line 1.342 seconds behind Isaquias Queiroz Dos Santos.
A short time later, Trois-Rivieres, Que. native Laurence Vincent-Lapointe captured gold in the C-1 200m event beating out Ecuador by 2.313 seconds.

Carling Zeeman was next on the podium, taking gold in the rowing single sculls event.
Canada also struck rowing gold in the women’s lightweight double sculls.
Liz Fenje and Katherine Sauks were first to the line, beating out Cuba and the U.S. with a time of six minutes 57.23 seconds, a personal best for Sauks.
“Our best previous time was 7:04 (on 2000m) in Rotterdam and we said we will go under seven minutes,” Sauks said.
Michelle Russell captured her third medal of the Games, taking silver for Canada in the women’s K-1 200m.

Russell won silver yesterday in the K-1 500-metre event and she also won Canada’s first gold of the Games in the K-4 500-metre event.
Canada struck rowing gold again, this time in the men’s quadruple sculls, finishing ahead of Cuba and Argentina.
De Jonge and Pierre-Luc Poulin also earned a bronze in the men’s K-2 200-metre final, earning a tie with Brazil. Argentina won gold in the event, with Cuba taking silver.
