EDMONTON – Albertans will be able to get their prescriptions renewed at a pharmacy without having to go see a doctor first.
Health Minister Fred Horne says the changes will kick in July 1 at more than 1,000-plus pharmacies across the province.

Horne, who made the announcement at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, said the change will free up time for physicians to handle more complex cases.
Pharmacists will renew and modify prescriptions in consultation with doctors and will be reimbursed by the government for the extra work.
Horne says there’s extra money in the budget because the province will soon be paying less for generic drugs.
There will also be nearly $16 million invested over the next three years to ensure Albertans have timely access to pharmacies in remote locations.
