Strathmore midget hockey player killed in highway crash

WATCH: A young hockey player and his grandmother were killed in a crash south of Strathmore over the weekend, and as Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports, their family is getting a lot of support from the Strathmore hockey community.

CALGARY – Friends have identified the 16-year-old boy killed in collision near Strathmore on Saturday.

RCMP say a Toyota Matrix was travelling northbound on Highway 817 around 3 p.m. when it was struck by a westbound semi-truck in the intersection with Highway 901.

Two people in the Matrix were pronounced dead at the scene.

On Sunday, the CFR Bisons hockey team posted a statement to their website identifying the victims as Markus Lavallee and his grandmother.

“We are devastated to let you know, that current Bison Markus Lavallee was tragically killed in a car accident Saturday afternoon, that also claimed the life of his Grandmother,” said the statement. “Please keep the Lavallee’s in your thoughts and prayers.”

The AAA midget hockey club is based in Strathmore.

RCMP don’t believe alcohol, weather conditions or road conditions played a role in the crash.

A Facebook group has been created in Markus ‘s memory.
