WATCH: Cat lovers on the lower mainland have been waiting for news of this for quite some time. The City of Vancouver has given its approval for a cat café to open this fall. Kristen Robinson has the details.
Some purr-fect news for Vancouver’s feline lovers, as a proposed cat café has received a key permit – and a confirmed location in the heart of the city.
“Breaking Mews,” began an article on Catfé’s blog today.
“We can has cat cafe!”
The cafe, which would allow people to interact with cats in a relaxed, indoor atmosphere, received its permit from the City of Vancouver to operate. It will be located in International Village Mall, in the southwest corner on the second floor.
Last year, the proposed venture, started by Vancouver resident Michelle Furbacher, received over $30,000 in an online crowdfunding campaign.
The Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) will be providing the cats for the cafe, and all will be available for adoption.
“It’s a huge complicated undertaking but I’m really excited about it,” Furbacher told Global News last year.
Cat café’s are relatively common in Asia and other parts of the world, but the first one in North America opened in Montreal less than a year ago.
When can Vancouver’s Catfé’s expect to be open?
“Our projected opening date will be some time in the month of October; we’ll announce a more specific date by the end of the summer,” they write.
