An attempt by RCMP to stop a stolen vehicle in Fort McMurray ended in gunfire Saturday afternoon, leaving the 16 year-old driver of the car and two officers injured.
It happened at about 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, in a high-traffic area right outside the city’s hospital. Police say shots were fired during the vehicle stop as the car was attempting to escape the scene.
One shot hit the teen driver of the car. The two other occupants in the car were not injured. They were arrested, though, but have since been released.

The driver was flown to an Edmonton area hospital with serious injuries. He is currently in stable condition.
The two injured officers, who have been 2 and 4 years of service, received only minor injuries in the incident.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation of this officer-involved shooting, while the RCMP Major Crime Unit from Edmonton has assumed the investigation into the original offense(s).
“We are looking for the occupants of a red minivan which was in the immediate vicinity at the time of the shooting. Those people are in no way connected to this. We simply want to speak with them because they had a prime vantage point of what happened,” said Sgt. Patrick Webb with the RCMP.
Both ASIRT and the RCMP are asking anyone else who may have witnessed what happened, or have any information relating to it, to contact ASIRT at (403) 592 4306, or the Fort McMurray RCMP. If you wish to remain anonymous you can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
