REGINA – People who have been evacuated due to wildfires in Saskatchewan are being advised to check their insurance. Officials say it is possible their living expenses may be covered while they are displace from their homes.

“Being separated from their friends, family and neighbours without the comforts of home is a hardship that we’re hoping can be eased a little if they have this mass evacuation coverage, which is a common feature on many home policies,” said Don McMorris, the minister responsible for SGI Canada.

During an evacuation order, accommodations, fuel, meals and transportation costs are some of the expenses that may be claimed.

People should check with their insurance broker to see if they are covered.

“This coverage can allow people to come together in a hotel as a group and have a place to call their own and give them a little breathing space. That’s something that can make a difference to our evacuees,” said McMorris.
