‘That’s the Canadian spirit’: Governor General visits Sask. wildfire evacuees

REGINA – Canada’s Governor General arrived in Saskatchewan Wednesday to meet with those impacted by the raging wildfires.

David Johnston and his wife visited evacuees at Evraz Place in Regina to show support to families displaced.

He told reporters he was blown away by the resilience shown by both evacuees and relief staff.

“That’s the Canadian spirit,” he said.  “What really touches you is to see the families and have a sense of the disruption in their lives and how well they’re managing in very trying circumstances,” he added.

Johnston was joined by the Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan, Vaughn Solomon-Schofield.

The pair were at an annual conference in Whitehorse but stopped in to see the relief efforts underway in Saskatchewan first-hand.
