GoPro camera strapped to turtle’s back offers unique view of Great Barrier Reef

TORONTO – Of all the animals in the world to choose from, seeing through the eyes of a turtle may not seem like the most enticing option.

But while that may be true on land, under the waves a sea turtle can glide and move as gracefully as a bird can in the sky – and thanks to a strategically placed GoPro camera, it can now take us along for the ride.

Hanging on like Marlin the clownfish from “Finding Nemo,” watch as the turtle navigates the ocean floor and takes in the incredible sights and surroundings that the reef provides.

The video is part of an effort by the WWF to bring attention to the level of pollution currently affecting the Great Barrier Reef.

Experts say the reef’s unique ecosystem is threatened by climate change, waste water, fishing and coastal developments including the use of nearby ports to export coal, which has led to dredging that kills valuable corals.

On Wednesday, the World Heritage Committee voted to put the Australian Government on probation until the health of the Great Barrier Reef improves.

Australia’s environment minister, Greg Hunt, told the meeting that his country had “clearly heard” the committee’s concerns and would strive to implement a 35-year conservation plan.
