MONTREAL – A explosion in a Hochelaga-Maisonneuve apartment building sent two people to hospital Tuesday night.
About forty firefighters responded to the call on Darling and Rouen streets at 9:45 p.m.
One of the residents, a 57-year-old man, was on fire when he escaped the building.
A neighbour extinguished the flames and the man was transported to hospital.
He has burns on at least 60 per cent of his body and remains in critical condition.
A woman in her 40s was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
Authorities evacuated the two neighbouring buildings as a precaution; tenants have now been allowed to return home.
