Two in hospital after explosion in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

MONTREAL – A explosion in a Hochelaga-Maisonneuve apartment building sent two people to hospital Tuesday night.

About forty firefighters responded to the call on Darling and Rouen streets at 9:45 p.m.

One of the residents, a 57-year-old man, was on fire when he escaped the building.

A neighbour extinguished the flames and the man was transported to hospital.

He has burns on at least 60 per cent of his body and remains in critical condition.

A woman in her 40s was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Authorities evacuated the two neighbouring buildings as a precaution; tenants have now been allowed to return home.

Officers are working to determine what caused the explosion.
