Deadly weekend in the north Okanagan

VERNON – While many Okanagan residents flocked to local lakes and beaches Sunday to escape the heat, RCMP in the north Okanagan were investigating three fatalities. A man’s body was found in Kalamalka Lake, and in a separate incident, two Vernon area men were killed in a motorcycle accident.

Sunday afternoon, police were dispatched to the south side of Cosens Bay, on Kalamalka Lake, after a member of the public called to say they’d found a body in the water.

RCMP did not have a clear answer as to whether or not the death was suspicious or involved criminal activity.

“We are still at the beginning of the investigation. We are not prepared, at this point to speculate, but it is still a very active investigation,” says Cst. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “We are asking anyone in the general public who was in that area around those cabins on the south side of Cosens Bay yesterday, if they saw anything at all to please call us and let us know.”

A spokesperson for the Cosens Bay Property Owners Society says four locals helped assist police on Sunday.

“I think obviously it shocks everybody,” says Rob Johnston. “We will wait and see what the police report says.”

Police say they have tentatively identified the man whose body was found in Kalamalka Lake but are not releasing his name as his family is still being notified. RCMP say they don’t believe there is any risk to the public.

It was not the first grim scene RCMP dealt with on Sunday. Around 6:30 a.m. police were called to a motorcycle crash on East Vernon Road. Police say two men had been riding a motorcycle that hit a parked utility trailer. Both men were riding on the same motorcycle and police say neither man was wearing a helmet. RCMP believe alcohol played a role in the crash.

The RCMP think the crash happened sometime before 6:30 a.m., but they aren’t sure exactly when as they have no witnesses.

“We are tracing their steps back to find out exactly where they were that night,” says Noseworthy.

Both men were already dead when police arrived. Police say the pair lived in the Vernon area, but RCMP are not releasing their names.
