UPDATE: Widespread power outage on scorching day

REGINA – Many homes and businesses in Regina were without power Sunday as SaskPower dealt with several outages, including in Harbour Landing and Albert Park.

The first outage first began around 7:00 in the morning. Many businesses in Harbour Landing had to close due to the outage, including Walmart and Tim Hortons.

“The impact is huge. We didn’t get to open until 2:30 this afternoon,” said Shawn Wright, manager at Ricky’s All-Day Grill. “It impacts our staff, it impacts our food, it impacts us financially. We’re new to the area and trying to grow our business and if customers can’t come in and eat then they don’t get a chance to try us out.”

Power was only fully restored by around 4:00 p.m.

The outage in the south-west part of Regina is being blamed on an underground cable fault.

“When you’ve got a really heavy demands on the system, either really hot or really cold day, it can expose weaknesses in cables and that could be what happened here. Sometimes we see that when everyone’s got their air-conditioner and fans on,” said Tyler Hopson with SaskPower.

Hopson said the city’s growth and keeping up with infrastructure renewal are its main challenges. The Albert Park substation is expected to be back up and running in a couple of weeks, following upgrades.

Power was also out in the North Central neighbourhood for a couple of hours Sunday. Grand Coulee, Pense and surrounding rural areas also experienced an outage.
