CALGARY – A five-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after falling from a third-storey window at a condo complex in Cranston on Tuesday.
Emergency crews were called to the Cranston Ridge condos around 9:30 p.m.
Police say the child was playing with siblings on a bunk bed when she tumbled down the ladder and into the window, forcing out the screen and falling to the ground below.
A wooden picnic table broke her fall. EMS estimate the length of the fall was between seven and 10 meters.
The young girl was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in serious but stable condition with soft-tissue injuries and possible internal injuries.
In the wake of the incident, police are reminding Calgarians to be vigilant about window safety in warm summer months.
Window safety tips from Calgary EMS:
Get daily National news
- Direct supervision of children is the single most effective way to prevent falls from windows and balconies
- Move furniture such as cribs, beds, stools, and change tables away from windows to prevent access to them
- Do not underestimate a child’s ability to climb. Furniture and other items stored on balconies and decks can be used to climb resulting in falls over the railing
- Consider installing safety devices which limit the distance in which a window be can open to 10cm (4 inch)
- Ensure the safety device can be released quickly, so the window can be used for escape in case of emergency
- Ensure that your balcony railings are not more than 10 cm (4 inch) apart. This will eliminate access between the vertical bars of a balcony, or deck
- Screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep children in
