Canadian tourists ‘deeply sorry’ for posing naked on Malaysian mountain

REGINA – Two Saskatchewan siblings have issued a statement saying they’re “deeply sorry for offending the local indigenous people” of Malaysia after posing nude on what’s considered a sacred mountaintop in that country.

Lindsey and Danielle Peterson both posted the same statement on their private Facebook pages Tuesday afternoon.

The pair were among ten travelers who took naked photos on Mount Kinabalu May 30th.

Locals believe their behaviour was disrespectful to the mountain, which is believed to be sacred, and caused an earthquake on June 5 that killed 18 climbers.

Their Malaysian lawyer has said they pleaded guilty in a local court to a charge of public indecency. They were sentenced to three days in jail, fined $1600 Canadian for obscene behavior in a public place, and deported.

The Malay Mail online news portal said the Petersens left the country on Saturday and the pair were believed to have arrived back home Sunday.
