REGINA – A rainbow flag was raised at City Hall Monday in recognition of Pride Week in Regina.
This is the Queen City Pride Festival’s 26th year celebrating the LGBTQ community, but 2014 was the first time a Regina mayor took part in a flag raising ceremony.
Mayor Michael Fougere was on hand Monday to help hoist it high again, and said he’s pleased to represent all of city council in doing so.
“It’s a reflection of our city that’s very diverse, that’s very tolerant,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “More needs to be done…but we are getting there.”
Phil Ollenberg is the Queen City Pride’s director of partnership and said the week is also about recognizing government and what he calls ‘straight allies’ support.
“We would have never gotten to the place that we are in terms of equality, rights, and inclusion, without all of our straight supporters and allies, so they are the most important, valuable group we can get,” he added.
Queen City Pride runs until the 21st and will feature over 30 different activities, including a parade downtown on Saturday.
