Wood burning stove controversy in Montreal

MONTREAL – The City of Montreal is cracking down on wood-burning stoves and this is frustrating restaurant-owners.

Several barbecue chicken restaurants on the Plateau have received fines related to air pollution because of the smoke from their restaurants.

Although owners claim they have already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on ventilation upgrades, the City is not satisfied with the changes.

The City of Montreal says inspectors have been warning restaurant owners about the need to install different ventilators.

In 2010, they issued 23 fines related to air pollution on the Island of Montreal.

According to a 2010 environmental assessment report, one wood-burning oven not fitted with a proper purification system was responsible for 23 poor air quality days in downtown Montreal.
