MONTREAL – A man in Vaudreuil-Dorion was fined $270 after he decided to mow his lawn on a Sunday afternoon in May.

His infraction? He was mowing the lawn after 4:00 p.m. and infringing upon a new article of a municipal nuisance bylaw adopted by city council on February 16.

The bylaw aims to limit the noise generated by motorized and electric engines by regulating the times that residents can use their lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chain saws, trimmers, etc.

The times are:

Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturdays and Holidays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The man at the centre of the controversy argues that he was unaware of the new bylaw and that he should have been issued a warning, not a fine.

But some residents say that the information has been made widely available, appearing on the city’s website, in the summer 2015 municipal bulletin, and even on electronic billboards in the city.

What do you think?

Did the city do enough to communicate the changes in the bylaw to residents?
