Eskimos head to Fort McMurray for Northern Kickoff

WATCH ABOVE: For the first time, the Edmonton Eskimos are playing a pre-season game in Fort McMurray. But, as Fletcher Kent reports, it’s not just about football.

EDMONTON — It’s an official CFL pre-season home game for the Edmonton Eskimos – and it’s in Fort McMurray.

On June 13, the Esks will take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders at the new $133-million SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place, which is currently under construction.

The game will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Wood Buffalo Mayor Melissa Blake says this stadium – and the big game – are game-changers for Fort McMurray. About 30,000 people work – but don’t live – in the city. She has worked hard to change that and feels the stadium will help.

“If we get them connected to events as they happen, I think it opens their eyes to the real possibility that they can bring their families here and take up residence here and really contribute in a whole new way to this region,” Blake said.

Eskimo players were also looking forward to the Northern Kickoff.

“I’m pumped,” said linebacker Odell Willis earlier this week.

“I’ve been hearing about Fort Mac ever since I got to Edmonton… I’m excited. Hopefully we can give the fans a good show.”

“Very excited,” added receiver Adarius Bowman. “It’s actually been a change up this whole training camp this year. We’ve been out here in Spruce Grove and they’ve been doing a great job taking care of us. But yeah, Fort Mcmurray… Not your usual, typical football arena, but I heard they’ve got a nice set up for us and we’re ready for it.”

The Northern Kickoff features two of the CFL’s most popular teams. They’re also intense rivals.

“It’s going to be special for everyone, I think,” said first-round draft pick Danny Groulx.

“For me, it’s going to be my first CFL game so I’m going to go there with a purpose. It’s going to be an awesome game, it’s going to be cool. Saskatchewan is a great team so it’s going to be a great pre-season game for us too.”

Saturday’s game will make history, becoming the most northern game in the 103-year history of the Canadian Football League.
