The Montefiore seniors residence is set to shut down in a year and half. The news came as a shock to families and seniors who are now left scrambling to find a new home.

“Everybody just doesn’t know what to do, where to go. Move in, move out, they can’t keep moving,” said Levine.

Management says declining occupancy is one of the factors that led to the decision to close.

“Our occupancy is not what it should be and it’s only normal we can’t provide the services for people coming in,” said André Grégoire, Montefiore’s general manager.

The average age of residents at the Montefiore is 90 years old and many have lived there for at least 10 years.

“With that kind of average age group, they need other services. So basically our decision we think is a responsible one,” Grégoire added.

Clients of the Montefiore have particular needs, it’s one of the few kosher seniors homes in Côte Saint-Luc. And that’s what worries family members the most.

“Suddenly they gotta move and where are they’re gonna go? With 80 or 91 especially if you’re kosher,” said Barbara Silverstein, a family member.

One of the options being considered includes a sister residence nearby. Montefiore says they will help residents with the transition.
