TORONTO – Senator Wilfred Moore announced a federal bill to phase out whales and dolphins in captivity.
The announcement was made at 12:15 p.m. at the National Press Theatre in Ottawa alongside Green Party Leader Elizabeth May.
The bill, called Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act, will prohibit breeding, imports, exports and live captures of whales, dolphins and porpoises across Canada.
Many conservationists are applauding the bill, including the director of the documentary Blackfish, chronicling the life of an orca and the consequences of keeping whales in captivity.
Former Sea World and Marineland trainers have also supported the bill.
