The city of Shawinigan said Fournier had been an employee since July 2014 and had volunteered to take part in the popular firefighter-sponsored race.

One of the race organizers, Carl Boulianne, said everything possible was done to save Fournier.

An emergency crew made up of firefighter cadets and an emergency room doctor tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Fournier at the scene.
