MONTREAL – If you have – or are thinking of buying – an Apple Watch, you might want to reconsider sneaking a peak at it while you’re behind the wheel.

The Quebec government says it will update the provincial highway safety code to include the Apple Watch and other similar electronic devices.

This comes after a Pincourt man was fined $120 and four demerit points for using his watch while driving.

Minister of Transport Robert Poeti said the device is distracting and using it while driving is illegal.

But the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) disagreed, insisting the Apple Watch is a bluetooth device, not a phone, so the clause will have to be included in the section dealing with “general distractions” and not cellular devices.

The government plans to implement the changes by the end of the year.
