Saskatoon firefighters battle 2 morning fires

SASKATOON – It was a busy morning for the Saskatoon Fire Department. Firefighters had to battle two fires on Friday within a half-hour period.

The first call came at 9:20 a.m. for a fire at 157 Stillwater Drive. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from an attached garage.

An offensive attack was started and the fire was contained to the garage. It was brought under control in 19 minutes.

The owners were home at the time of the fire and were able to get out safely.

An investigator determined that the cause of this fire was electrical in nature. Smoke and water damage to the garage and home is estimated at $3,000.

The second call came in 28 minutes later for a fire at 230 Avenue R North and firefighters could see heavy smoke as they rushed to the scene.

They arrived to find a detached garage engulfed in flames, with the fire having extended to the house and deck and a second home and garage.

Crews started an aggressive attack and the fire was brought under control in 27 minutes.

The occupants of the homes were able to escape.

The cause of the second blaze is ‘undeterminable’ and accidental in nature, according to the fire department.

Damage to the garage, home and adjacent structures is estimated at $250,000.

No injuries were reported in either fire.
