TORONTO – Despite being bullied over his looks, an 8-year-old Florida boy decided to grow out his hair for more than two years so he could donate his locks to kids who had lost theirs.

Christian McPhilamy wanted to grow out his hair after seeing a TV commercial for a children’s hospital which featured young cancer patients without hair, Today reported.

McPhilamy’s mother, Deeanna Thomas, said her son started to get teased about his hair once it started to grow past his chin.

“Sometimes they would call me a girl,” Christian told the show.

“Even out and about or at a park, he would be playing with a bunch of boys and they’d be like, ‘You look like a girl,'” Thomas added.

Thomas explained that her son was often mistaken for a girl, but the boy never lost sight of his goal.

“I have been told I have beautiful ‘daughters’, he was called a girl at summer camps and playgrounds throughout the years, by some doctors, some adults and children, and people even offered him money to cut it [his hair],” Thomas said in a Facebook post.

Thomas said her son was never taunted or teased by his friends and teachers, who were aware of McPhilamy’s fundraising goal.

Two years later, McPhilamy reached his goal and donated four 25 cm ponytails to Children With Hair Loss foundation.

“Christian has such a huge heart,” Thomas told Today. “I don’t even know if there are words to describe how proud I am of him.”
