Retired Calgary officer Stephen Huggett’s sex abuse trial begins

CALGARY – The trial for a former Calgary police officer accused of sexually abusing a young girl began on Tuesday.

Stephen Huggett is charged with invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference with a child under 14 years.

The charges stem from several alleged encounters in the 1990s said to involve a seven-year-old girl.

On Tuesday, the alleged victim broke down while testifying. She told court Huggett frequently showered with her, gave her alcohol and touched her inappropriately.

Huggett was previously sentenced to nine months in jail after being convicted of possession of child pornography in 2009.

He spent 25 years with the Calgary Police Service before retiring in 2007.
